Cottage House Plans

The Oxford English Dictionary's primary definition of a Cottage is "a simple, humble abode". Cottage style encompasses so many different looks that it's difficult to define. We have English Cottages, French Cottages, Beach Cottages, Lake Cottages, Country Cottages, Craftsman Cottages, and Rustic Cottages.

What do they all have in common? They are all charming and cozy. When you think of a cottage house, what comes to mind? Your grandmother, a yard bursting with hydrangea bushes, holly hocks, and daffodils....a picket fence, thatched roof, Dutch-doors, and shutters.....window boxes with ivy geraniums, story-books and Hansel and Gretel....we could go on and on. A few common features are:
  • Under 2000 Square Feet
  • Casual atmosphere
  • Simple design
  • Having balconies or window seats
Cottage houses mean so many different things to us all. The Rustic Cottage house might be sitting on a Minnesota lake and outfitted for fishing and hunting. Memories of Beach Cottages will be beach umbrellas, canvas chairs and bowls of seashells and sand dollars. The thing you remember most about a Country Cottage are the smells - cookies & bread, blossoms and crisp white sheets.

In centuries past, European Cottages were considered dwellings for agricultural workers. However, the name Cottage also encompassed grandiose homes such as the famous English 16th century Anne Hathaway Cottage. It is actually a twelve room Elizabethan farmhouse with thatched roof, timbered walls and lattice windows; not exactly laborers quarters!

Interiors of Cottage House Plans can take on many faces. Commonly thought of features are rustic pine floors, bathrooms with pedestal sinks and claw-foot tubs, kitchens with built-in seating and hutches, back porches, beaded board wainscoting and window seats. Whatever your idea of a Cottage is, we probably all agree that the word comfort comes to mind.
