Cottage House Plans

A cottage is often described as a small, cozy home. The typical cottage has an intimate interior with less than 2,000 square feet of space and looks like an average grandmother's house on the exterior. Today's cottages range in size and have a modern style to captivate those who want something quaint and cozy without looking dated.

Quaint Cottage Floor Plans

Cottage house plans may differ in their square footage but not their features. You'll find attached garages and as many as five bedrooms in some plans. However, the typical cottage plan will come with less than 1,500 square feet of space, no garage and only two bedrooms. Once built, the house will have a signature front gable and columns along the porch. Larger cottages will have multiple gables and a grand entry porch.

Exterior Details

Some cottage designs have one story with all the bedrooms neatly connected to the living room. Others have two stories with the bedrooms located on the second floor, freeing up space below for offices and entertainment areas. Wood and vinyl siding are common materials on the exterior, including brick and stone in luxurious cottages. Other exterior features include:

  • Hipped and gabled roofs
  • A single window in the front gable
  • Wrapped porches
  • Tall chimneys
  • Decorative wood in the gables

Interior Details

A traditional cottage interior has a cozy feeling and lacks the wide-open space of most modern homes. Walls separate the kitchen from the living room, and the bedrooms are located at each corner of the house. However, larger cottages with more than 2,500 square feet of interior space will have open-concept kitchens overlooking the great room, which leads out to the deck and a grilling station. Other interior features include:

  • Fireplaces
  • Breakfast nooks
  • Studies and dens
  • Wood and granite materials
